Comet Energy Park is a grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) under development near Blackwater, in Central Queensland. It is the flagship project of Comet Energy Pty Ltd, developed by Hadstone Energy.
Battery storage sits at the heart of the shift to renewables: it captures energy when generation is high and releases it when demand peaks, firming the grid and providing reliable power to consumers and industry. Comet Energy Park will play that role for Central Queensland’s mining industry near Blackwater.
With up to 120 MW of power and four to eight hours of storage duration, Comet Energy Park will help firm renewable generation across the region — storing energy during periods of surplus and dispatching it when the network needs it most.
Connecting to the transmission grid
Comet will connect to the transmission network at Powerlink’s existing Blackwater substation. The grid-forming inverters in the Comet project will help stabilise the power grid across the region.
Approvals and construction
The project holds Development Approval from Central Highlands Regional Council (see the approved plans below). Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
